CCTS—Cumberland County Transportation                Services Society

 

The Cumberland County Transportation Service Society (CCTS) is an accessible, affordable, not-for-profit, public transportation service for residents of Cumberland County who are transportation disadvantaged. 

 

CCTS is registered under the Societies Act through the Registry of Joint Stocks.

 

History

 

The Healthy Parrsboro Area Community (HPAC) has been one of the driving forces responsible for bringing a viable transportation option to our county. Under their direction Saint Mary’s University conducted a feasibility study to see what the needs were. “The results were pretty much what we expected,” said Dora Fuller.  “We have known for some time now that seniors were missing doctors’ appointments because there was no affordable option.”

 

Equally as passionate with regard to the issue of accessible, affordable transportation was the Amherst and Area Community Transportation (ACT) service group.  This group of individuals took an approach to subsidize taxi fares to provide accessible and affordable services for persons with disabilities and low income earners in Amherst and surrounding areas. “There is not much in terms of inclusive transportation,” said John Bradford.  John’s son Chris, who happens to use a chair, is constantly faced with the challenge of how and how much it will cost to get from one place to another.

 

The two groups came together out of necessity. In their pursuit of accessing provincial monies, it was discovered that only one group per area would get funding. The two groups met with the province and came up with a solution that was plausible for all involved and we were able to increase the number of communities to whom access to transportation services would be a reality.  In doing so, a two vehicle model was suggested that would service both the county and the Amherst area.
